Door Lock Fitting & Replacement in Liverpool

If you are locked out, have lost your keys, had the misfortune to be burgled, or simply need to replace your existing locks to British Standard BS3621:2004 in order to meet your insurance requirements.Beckwith Locksmiths can help

Two in three burglars gain access through a door. The following descriptions may help in understanding the difference between the most common domestic door locks and help identify the most suitable locks for your property.

Mortice Lock Fitting & Replacement in Liverpool

The Home Office recommends fitting British Standard BS3621:2004 five-lever mortise deadlocks on external doors. Insurance companies often require this standard. Mortice locks are embedded in the door and can only be opened with a key. They are commonly found on back doors and sometimes added to front doors with a cylinder rim lock. Deadlocks have a keyhole and bolt, while sash locks have a bolt, latch, and handles. Beckwith Locksmiths suggest upgrading to 5-lever locks tested to BS3621:2004, meeting insurance requirements. Mortice locks prevent burglars from unlocking doors through adjacent windows and escaping through the door.

Cylinder Rim Lock Fitting & Replacement in Liverpool (Yale Locks)

Most front and internal door locks are cylinder locks, commonly known as ‘Yale’ locks. If your front door automatically locks when closed and requires a key to open from the outside but opens without a key from the inside, it’s a cylinder rim lock (Yale lock).

Beckwith Locksmiths in Liverpool replaces cylinders with like-for-like or upgraded high-quality locks as needed. For lost or stolen keys, only the cylinder is changed. Cylinder rim locks are surface-mounted with a connecting cylinder inside the door and a keyhole on the outside.

Restricted cylinders offer added physical protection against unauthorized key duplication, providing enhanced security. Beckwith Locksmiths recommends supplementing cylinder rim locks, especially on front doors, with mortice locks.

Additional Door Security in Liverpool

Beckwith Locksmiths can also fit additional security such as door chains or bars.

Window Lock Fitting & Replacement in Liverpool

One in three burglaries is through a window. Consider fitting high visibility window locks, so if a burglar breaks the glass the window locks will mean they still cannot open the window and risk injury climbing in through broken glass.

Window locks should be fitted to easily accessible windows such as those downstairs and next to flat roofs and drain pipes. Remember not to leave the keys on show in the window locks. Beckwith Locksmiths in Liverpool can help with everything from simply opening.

UPVC Door Locks in Liverpool

UPVC door and window locks are commonly found on your common domestic homes front & back doors, and also can be found on french and patio doors. Beckwith Locksmiths are a Liverpool Locksmith they deal with the following problems involving UPVC Door Locks in the Liverpool area on a daily basis and will be able to assist you:

The Lock is Jammed and/or Stuck

There are usually two common issues

This problem is normally indicative of one of two things and can be a combination the two, the two main components of a uPVC/composite door are the multi-point locking mechanism and the euro-profile cylinder lock .

1. THE KEY DOES WILL NOT TURN OR GO ALL THE WAY IN

If the key does not go all the way into the lock cylinder, usually referred to as the euro lock, or the key will not turn once it is in, this is usually down to euro-cylinder failure. This part needs then needs to be replaced once the door is opened.

The Cause

Common reasons this happens are because the euro-lock worn, a cheap lock has been fitted, the lock is now out of sync because the lock has been operated from the outside with a key still in the lock on the inside, or alternatively just general wear and tear.

2. KEY DOES GO IN AND TURN BUT DOESN’T UNLOCK

If the key goes into the euro lock and turns anti clockwise (to unlock) one complete turn and the door still won’t unlock this is usually a sign that the multi point lock has failed or a security hook/bolt has stuck.

The Cause

The usual reasons for this are: door or door frame aren’t fitting correctly or are not aligned and the handles have been forced up, normal every day wear and tear, this very delicate mechanism has broken or possibly that the door has been constantly slammed.

UPVC DOOR WON’T CLOSE

The Cause

This is normally caused by either the strike receiver part of lock not being correctly adjusted or working loose and no longer being set properly, or the rubber door trim has moved and is not sitting correctly on door, thus stopping the door from shutting properly.

Door or Window Lock is Broken/Damaged

1. UPVC DOOR/WINDOW LOCK ISSUE WHEN LIFTING ( LOOSE HANDLE )

when lifting the upvc door or window handle, the Upvc door/window lock is very notchy. This is normally associated with a worn or faulty locking mechanism.

2. THE KEY HAS TO BE JIGGLED UP AND DOWN TO INSERT OR REMOVE

When the key is inserted into euro profile cylinder but you have to jiggle the key up and down, it is usually a symptom of a defective or worn euro-cylinder lock or poorly cut keys.

3. DOOR HOOK/BOLT WONT WITHDRAW IN OR OUT

One or more of the multi point hooks or bolts won’t withdraw in or out correctly when the window handle or uPVC door handle is operated. This is usually a sign of a damaged mechanism or locking security device.

Can you replace the Lock without a Key?

BarrelLockA KEY IS NORMALLY REQUIRED

The reason a key is normally required to change a euro-profile cylinder lock is that the cam on the lock needs to be aligned with the euro lock body to extract it from the door.

I DON’T HAVE KEYS

If you don’t have keys and the euro-cylinder retaining screw is extracted in the normal manner, the euro-lock will NOT slip out as the cam is in the wrong position restricting the euro lock from being extracted.

A LOCKSMITH CAN SWAP THE LOCK EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO KEY

Beckwith Locksmiths in Liverpool will be able swap out the euro-lock, even if there is no key by using an selection of professional tools and knowledge to align the cam to enable the removal of the euro-profile cylinder lock without any damage the door.

Door or Window unable to Lock

1. Window or door strikes are not in the right position to allow for the mechanism to reach the fully locked position or handle to reach maximum lift position to allow the key to turn on upvc or composite doors.

2. Hinges may need a slight adjustment to allow the correct fitting of door/frame or window/frame.

3. Rubber seal surrounding window or door not sitting right.

4. Mechanical failure of either locking mechanism in window or door, euro-cylinder or hardware issue with damaged or worn lock furniture (locking window handle or upvc door handles)

If you experience any of the aforementioned issues, you will require your upvc door or window locks replacing or repairing. Contact Beckwith Liverpool Locksmith who will be able to give you expert advice.

Locked Out – Lost Keys?

If you are locked out and lose your keys, opening your door will depend on the type of lock on the door:

Cylinder Rim Locks (Yale Locks)

If you lose keys to a cylinder rim lock (Yale lock) our Locksmiths will try and pick the cylinders where possible if this is not possible we would most probably have to drill the lock to open the door and then change the lock barrel. Barrel changes on Yale type locks are generally inexpensive.

Mortice Locks

If you lose keys to a mortice lock a professional locksmiths will usually drill the lock to gain entry, replace the lock and provide a new set of keys. Alternatively a professional locksmith could pick the lock to gain entry and then make a new key for the lock however, making keys is more time consuming and therefore often the more expensive option.
